On January 21, the Centre for Health Care Management welcomed The Honorable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, MP, to UBC.  She is the Member of Parliament for St. Paul’s, a Toronto-area riding, and the Opposition Critic for health.  She was also the Minister of State for Public Health from 2003 to 2006.Prior to her election, Dr. Bennett was a family physician, and is also the author of the book “Kill or cure: How Canadians can remake their health care system”, which was published in 2000.

Dr. Bennett spoke to an audience at Vancouver General Hospital and to the incoming class of the Executive MBA in Health Care program. She emphasized the importance of sustaining the Canadian health care system by keeping people well, rather than focusing on treating illness, and she gave examples from other countries of how they are using these strategies to maintain and improve the health of their citizens.  She also discussed the role of social determinants on the health of populations.
